1958年的一天，亚洲身心都布满创痕的安娜•朱林（弗吉妮•莱德因 Virginie Ledoyen 饰）受雇来到法国位于阿尔卑斯山脚下的圣天使孤儿院担任清洁工作，亚洲这座孤儿院有着悠久的历史，二战期间曾作为临时的儿童医院接收了三百多名孩子。如今孩子们随着负责人弗兰卡（Catriona MacColl 饰）前往新的所在，古老的圣天使行将废弃，连同它所隐藏的秘密一同淡出历史。偌大的孤儿院，除了波兰管家海伦娜外，还有一个疯疯癫癫的小女孩朱蒂丝（洛•多琳 Lou Doillon）。她如鬼魅般游走各个房间，身边仿佛站满看不见身影的孩子。安娜不得已卷入其中，渐渐发现了其中的秘密……
