回复 :袭人回家探亲。宝玉赴宁府看戏，茗烟陪宝玉偷偷去袭人家探望。李嬷嬷大闹宝玉房。袭人哄骗宝玉，称其母兄定欲将其赎身，宝玉信以为真。袭人趁机提出“留府条件”，劝诫宝玉不可再任性恣情，不喜务正。袭人觉出宝玉与黛玉湘云太过亲密，不合规矩，便冷落他，来劝宝玉。元妃省亲后，欲不辜负姐妹们大好青春，着她们入大观园居住，宝玉一同入园读书。宝玉与众姐妹入住大观园，恣意玩乐，快乐非常。茗烟搜来禁书给宝玉解闷，宝玉、黛玉共读西厢、黛玉听《会真记》（即《牡丹亭》），得到爱情启蒙。贾芸到荣府谋事，贿赂凤姐。小红见到贾芸，春心微动。贾芸探宝玉，与小红换帕传情；黛玉发幽情，被宝玉窥破，二人口角；薛蟠假传贾政之命，骗宝玉吃酒；黛玉担忧宝玉，深夜探望，被拒门外，感时伤情。芒种节，众姐妹在园中送花神，独缺黛玉。宝钗在滴翠亭听到小红私情，使计脱身，小红疑到黛玉身上。宝玉听到葬花吟，感时伤怀，哭倒在地。小红为凤姐取荷包，得到凤姐赏识。宝玉道冯紫英家喝酒，结识琪官（即蒋玉函）。娘娘颁布赏赐，独宝钗、宝玉相同，黛玉不快，更看见宝玉望着宝钗发呆，黛玉心酸。贾府全部出动前往清虚观打醮，张道士给宝玉提亲，宝玉不快，回家和黛玉吵架，惊动了老太太。宝玉去找黛玉和好，在贾母处，宝黛钗三人暗语相加，气氛紧张，宝玉到王夫人处，因为他的事，金钏被王夫人赶出去。宝玉借晴雯跌扇子与之口角，后为讨晴雯欢心，宝玉故意让她撕扇。湘云偶然拾到宝玉丢失的麒麟，二人讨论仕途经济时，黛玉在窗外意外偷听到宝玉对自己的赞扬，感慨果然没有认错知己。宝玉误将袭人当作黛玉，错诉肺腑，引发袭人的担心。金钏儿因被撵而羞愤投井。长史官来找琪官，加之贾环诽谤宝玉，贾政棒打宝玉。惊动了贾府众人。
