Jerry（陈奕迅 饰）与许乐（陈晓东 饰）认识多年，日韩更同住一屋。许乐在酒吧认识了Felicia（周丽淇 饰）并迅速拍拖。Jerry感觉好友被抢走，日韩常与Felicia斗嘴。后来许乐的姐姐许欢（杨千嬅 饰）从西藏流浪回来，就更加与Jerry处于水火不容的状态，但其实许欢一直都暗恋Jerry。Jerry认识了论文导师海素（容祖儿 饰），Jerry表现出对海素极大的好感，于是就同意当海素的调查对象，以研究年轻人的恋爱心态，可是最后还是分手收场。许乐也发现了原来自己心爱的女友其实早就有了同居的恋人，伤心欲绝。此时的Jerry才发现了许欢的心意，决心追回许欢。

Introducing concurrently with the narrator; he speaks of himself, his thoughts, his point of view. He tells that he is not afraid of bandits or gangs; on the contrary he gets a kick out armed conflicts. To get a start in his new duty, he shops for a watchdog; and he buys an untrained attack dog as his companion. Then he speaks of the adjudications that the death sentence for fugitives is lacking influence. From his point of view, the judicatory tribunal must execute the fugitives in public. In the morning the next day he wears his uniform and start working with pride.Whilst he is on his duty, a very harmonic music score begins to be played on the piano. The watchman spectates the peaceful life on the street. At that time we catch on that socialism is not a governmental regime; yet it's an uneducated behavior.As a final scene the watchman witnesses of a cadet school's pupils being taught of the democracy.
