村里闹鸡瘟，午夜而母亲又怀有身孕，午夜去镇上赶集卖掉八只鸡的“美差”，就落到了8岁的宁小山身上。熟悉的山间小路、并不熟络的镇上居民，稚嫩的小山能卖掉八只鸡吗？其间，他先后遇到“疯婆子”葛红、卖肉贩子、嘲笑小山的非主流以及追着他不放的一条狗，面对“整个世界”的敌意，8岁的小山该如何在成长过程中去了解这个世界？尤其是在偷偷跑去电影院看电影后，小山的八只鸡丢了，作为全家生活依靠的八只鸡，小山回家该如何向母亲交差？而他的父亲又去了哪里？
