昭和五十五年的一桩密室谋杀案，视频由于上司急于升迁，视频所以最终草草结案，惟有警探笹垣润三（船越英一郎 饰）对此案不能释怀。多年后，当年嫌犯的女儿西本雪穗已改名唐泽雪穗（堀北真希 饰），并且过着与之前毫不相干的生活。但是，仿佛她有幸运之神的庇护一样，凡是给她制造麻烦的人，都会发生意外。后来，雪穗的好友江利子（绿友利惠 饰）与有钱人家的少爷篠冢一成（姜畅雄 饰）相恋，但最终一成却选择了与雪穗结婚。此时，笹垣虽已退休，但他始终没有放弃追杀当年谋杀案的真相，而且，他的目标最终锁定了当年被害人的儿子桐原亮司（高良健吾 饰）和雪穗……本片改编自东野圭吾的同名小说。

It is more memorable than Julien Duvivier's earlier silent version of 1925, also named Poil de Carotte.The part of Poil de Carotte was played by 11 year old Robert Lynen, who was alleged to have been discovered whilst walking down the Champs-Elysées in Paris. Lynen is totally captivating and the film made him an instant star, launching what looked like becoming a very promising film career – until he was shot dead whilst fighting against the Germans in 1944. Harry Baur, a legendary stage and film actor (who also died during World War II, allegedly at the hands of the Gestapo), also turns in a typically fine performance. The reconciliation between father and son at the end of the film provides its most enduring image, enough to melt the heart of all but the most stoical of spectators.
